ABOUT
GET TO KNOW US

Michael Alvarez

I am 22 years old, from the Bronx, New York. I grew up overweight as a child, until I started getting serious in athletics such as boxing and wrestling, and I have stuck with it ever since. I am currently a 3-time All-American boxer for the UNLV Boxing team, with plans to turn professional either this year, or the upcoming year after my last collegiate season. I am also a certified coach through the National Federation of State High School Associations and working towards a degree in nutrition and dietetics. With this, I hope to open up a successful boxing gym at the end of my boxing career.

Shane Figueroa

I have been training and teaching Taekwon-Do for 12 years. I’ve been ranked 1st and 3rd in the US for patterns and sparring respectively, as well as competing internationally. I am the coach of the first ever US world champion in patterns.  Competing and coaching has taught me the necessity of self evaluation and grit, and about the level of detail and extent that is required for success. I have used Taekwon-Do as a recovery tool after two hip surgeries to enhance my strength, control, and flexibility to be better than it ever was when I was a teenager.

Daniel Godfrey

I’m from Compton, California but the majority of my life I’ve been raised in Las Vegas. I’ve been playing football for 15 years, having a competitive mindset and overall having the mental toughness is the nature of my family. Growing up I was always the guy to be coming from behind, but having a competitive mindset with everything I do it has helped me get through those hard obstacles and overcome many challenges in my life. In my last year of high school I suffered two major injuries that almost prevented me from playing my senior year.  I was depressed and stressed because that year was going to determine what college I was would play for. I did not receive a scholarship from any college, but I was fortunate enough to walk on to UNLV's football team. Without my competitive mindset, I would not be where I am today.

I'm a 22 year old raised in Las Vegas, and I've been practicing Muay Thai for the last 10 years. As a kid I was very bookish and I got picked on a lot because I wasn't very good at traditional sports. Training in Muay Thai has made a huge impact on my life. I'm more confident, more fit, and much more disciplined than I was prior to training. I've competed in several in-house tournaments against a variety of weight classes. Preparing for those matches taught me dedication, hard work, and how to deal with the feeling of failure. I strongly encourage everyone to try this out at least once in their life to challenge themselves mentally and physically for a better mindset.

Armani Rogers

I have been playing football for 14 years. I have won multiple awards and even got Mountain West Freshmen of the Year here at UNLV. Football has changed my life in many ways, from the competitiveness to the leadership. It has pushed me to the farthest I could go and has challenged my physical ability. Not only has this sport made me value teamwork, it has also improved my concentration and work ethic. I have learned to work and communicate with others while building friendships among my teammates. Football is a crucial sport for improving mental and physical well being, all while having fun.
