Knowledge is Power

aNY OF THOSE SYMPTOMS SOUND FAMILIAR?

It's okay! A great many people struggle with feelings of hopelessness, the feeling of uncertainty, or just a general lack of purpose in life.  These symptoms can point to a lack of wellness in certain areas of life and can lead to unhealthy coping habits due to the stress. Luckily, research shows that obtaining and maintaining a competitive mindset can help alleviate these feelings. By creating and maintaining a fitness routine it will give you a sense of responsibility.  Having a sense of purpose and commitment to other people can discipline you into learning to deal with stress in daily life.  Even if you have never competed in a sport or are just working towards self betterment, it can make all the difference!

What is wellness?

and how  can a lack of wellness affect you?

Wellness is defined as the process towards making healthy decisions that lead to a more fulfilling life beyond the scope of not being sick. Wellness can look different to everyone and is subjective to the individual since it is an active process.

A lack of wellness can lead to negative feelings towards oneself, a lack of growth as a person, and the sense of a lack of purpose in one's life.

These feelings can lead to increased symptoms of anxiety and depression. Over the course of a lifetime 25% of individuals will suffer from an anxiety disorder and 20%  of individuals will experience depression in their lives.

So how can you prevent that?

Don't Believe it? then ask them!

We've gathered the testimony of a few athletes from UNLV to detail the benefits of competition in their lives. Press play to hear them talk about how competition and involvement in sports has changed their lives!

Exercise & Competition

A potential solution for the lack of wellness in one's life.

We know. Nobody wants to hear that plain old exercise can be the solution instead of a magic pill. BUT, there is a moderate, positive correlation between decreases in depression and anxiety to exercising.

Competitive sports is a great way to start exercising, even if the only person you compete against is the person you were yesterday. It sounds cheesy, but it's true.

Research shows that competitive sports players have better coping mechanisms than those who do not play sports. Even if the competition isn't "official" it can still help your health! The sense of commitment and dedication to those other than yourself can give you the drive you need to really make a change in your lifestyle.

Think you Need a ton of exercise to make a difference?

Myth!

To have a lasting effect on your state of mind, you only need to exercise 3 times per week for 30-60 minutes and any kind of exercise can help. A person can experience a reduction in anxiety and feelings of depression almost immediately after exercise. However, these changes can fade in as little as 24 hours so it is important to take that into account.
